On Saturday, May 5, horse racing enthusiasts and eager spectators will arrive in Louisville, Ky. for the 144th Annual Kentucky Derby. The historic Churchill Downs racetrack will be filled with the sights, sounds, and fashion of this storied event. Timeless traditions such as the exquisite derby hat ensembles, mint julep cocktails, and garland of roses, will be on full display as thousands partake in the festivities of the day — the most important one being the race itself.
Lasting mere minutes, 24 jockeys and their prized horses will line up at the gate and wait for the signal of the start of this year’s race. Jockey John Velzaquez and his horse, Always Dreaming, won last year’s prized, gold trophy. This year’s winning odds are being placed on horses such as Justify, who touts
Bob Baffert as a trainer. Baffert’s impressive resume includes training four Kentucky Derby winning horses, and a Triple Crown with the famed American Pharoah. Another favorite this year is Magnum Moon, who comes off of two spectacular wins at the Arkansas Derby and Rebel Stakes.
