After years of living in New York City, where they’d encountered the trend of popular paint-and- sip studios, entrepreneurs Mary Lou Bradley and Joe Groom saw an opportunity to relocate to Mary Lou’s hometown of Pittsburgh and start their own business. They opened Paint Monkey in December of 2011. “We’d been told about Lawrenceville, checked it out, and immediately fell in love,” says Bradley. “Our approach to this concept is unique in that we provide a pre-sketched canvas to our customers to give a more relaxed, anxiety-free experience.” In addition to regularly scheduled classes each evening, the space can play host to everything from BYOB birthday parties, to bridal showers and bachelorette parties. “Because of Paint Monkey’s close proximity to Pittsburgh night life in Lawrenceville, the Strip, and points in the East End, it makes for a perfect start for a fun evening for the bride,” says Bradley. The cost is $35 per person for a two-hour painting session, and $45 for a three-hour painting session, with space to host up to 36 guests.
