Former Pittsburgh Steeler and Hall of Famer Franco Harris, and his wife, Dana, hosted the Josh Gibson Centennial Negro League Gala at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown Hotel. This annual black tie dinner event raised $50,000 and drew in 385 guests. Chuck Sanders of Savoy Restaurant was honored with the Gibson Award for Business, the Pittsburgh Pirates 1971 Word Series team received the Gibson Award for Sports, and Duquesne University’s journalism program won the Gibson Award for Education. In honor of Gibson’s 100th birthday this year, the foundation created a new award — the Josh Gibson Legacy Award. Reggie Jackson, also known as “Mr. October,” was this year’s recipient of this award. “We wanted to honor somebody who has contributed to Major League Baseball,” says Natisha D. Frye, Josh Gibson Foundation Board Member. “We were the first to give out this award and many MLB teams are following suit.”
