After dating for over four years, Joe Nickel and Marc Lambo were ready to take the next step and make their relationship official. “We always discussed getting married, so we just agreed on a date and threw a party,” Joe says of their early summer nuptials. The couple’s ceremony and reception took place at the historic Hartwood Acres Mansion. “The two of us — with the help of friends and family — did a lot to make sure our wedding had custom touches that made it feel more personal for everyone to enjoy,” Joe continues. This included having Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Christine Donohue, a friend of the grooms, officiate the ceremony. Donohue played a large part in having Pennsylvania move forward on marriage equality, making her presence even more significant. During the reception, the couple shared their first dance with their mothers to “I’ll Be There” by Jackson 5. “The day was filled with so many supportive friends and family members who have shaped us into who we are today, many of whom traveled in from all over the country,” Joe says. “It meant a lot to us to have them there celebrating our day.”

The grooms suited up in custom-made tuxedos. “We both chose black, but had them designed with different fabrics, details, and finishes,” Joe says.

“Neither of us are big fans of wedding cake, so a talented friend of ours provided cupcakes, along with a very large assortment of cookies personally made by our family and friends,” Joe says.

Before they began planning, Joe and Marc were advised “to not create unrealistic achievables and don’t focus on things that aren’t truly important. It’ll only distract you from enjoying the process and add stress the day of.”

“One of the highlights of our ceremony was when our flower girl, Marc’s niece, Alivia, released the balloon she was carrying as the song ‘I Choose You’ by Sara Bareilles concluded,” Joe says. “It was a beautiful moment that our guests continue to talk about.”
