Football greats Heath Miller and Alan Faneca, and their wives Katie and Julie, returned to host Glimmer of Hope’s 12th annual Bid for Hope Gala. More than 240 guests gathered at Restaurant ECHO in Cranberry, raising more than $100,000 for Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and Magee-Womens Research Institute! This year’s gala tipped the scales, bringing in $1 million to date in support of the development of clinical research to patient services for young women with breast cancer. KDKA-TV’s Bob Pompeani also returned as emcee and auctioneer, and 24 Pittsburgh Steelers, including Ben Roethlisberger, Shaun Suisham, and Brett Keisel were in attendance. “We’re so grateful for the Steelers’ support,” says Glimmer of Hope founder Diana Napper. “And, the event was a tremendous success!” A packed auction of Steelers paraphernalia, including Miller’s Game 1 cleats, which he laced with pink shoelaces, kicked off the evening. ECHO received rave reviews for its crab cakes, pork filet, and beef tenderloin hors d’oeuvres, and singer Nick Marzock provided the entertainment, as guests enjoyed ECHO’s “unbelievable desserts.” “Glimmer of Hope’s generosity is allowing us to find ways to improve and lengthen the lives of young women fighting this often aggressive form of breast cancer,” says Kandace P. McGuire, M.D., director of Premenopausal Breast Cancer Services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.
