——— For Freya Chatterjee and Steve Bayer, the union of two cultures played an important role in their nuptial celebrations. The pair, who met at the University of Pittsburgh and were engaged while hiking at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, married with not one ceremony, but two!
Not to mention the fact that Freya donned three breathtaking gowns. Held at Epiphany Catholic Church, the first ceremony was a traditional Catholic Mass, where Freya wore a white dress with lace overlay. A Hindu ceremony and reception at Fairmont Pittsburgh followed, as did the bride’s first of two Indian-inspired frocks full of colorful, heavy beading in fuschia, deep purple, gold, diamonds, and pearls. Stunning orange and indigo uplighting lit the ballroom, as did table-top lanterns and romantic candles. Flowers by Hens & Chicks in Shadyside were “amazing,” Freya says. Not only did her eight bridesmaids carry bouquets of orchids and dahlias, but the room was beautifully adorned in red Hanging Amaranthus and magenta Phalaenopsis. “Planning two weddings in one day could have been an overwhelming process,” says Freya, who credits her family, friends, and wedding planner, Shari Zatman of Perfectly Planned by Shari, for pulling the whole day together. As their 210 guests noshed on mini crab cakes with jalapeño and pineapple mayonnaise, and mini lamb kofta, soon came an extensive dinner menu of pierogies, pulled pork, Chicken Tikka Masala, butter naan, peas pulao, and chutneys — just to name a few. A cookie bar and cake pop display satisfied sweet cravings. And, signature drinks in orange, purple, and pink matched the color scheme. A highlight of the evening was an authentic dance performance by First Class Bhangra. “It was super fun,” says Freya. The duo continued the festivities two days later, as they whisked off to Antigua in the West Indies.
THE DESIGN | Tabitha McGarvey of Hello Beautiful Designs created the table numbers and escort cards.
THE DRESSES | Freya’s first dress was a traditional bridal style with lace off-the-shoulder overlay, purchased at One Enchanted Evening in Wexford. Her Hindu ceremony lehenga was from Saahil Boutique in New Jersey.
THE FLORALS | Hens & Chicks prettily provided the bright blossoms. Freya’s eight bridesmaids carried pink Cattleya Orchids, magenta Ball Dahlias, orange Mokara Orchids, Sunset Dahlias, magenta Phalaenopsis, and hot pink Dinner Plate Dahlias.
THE CAKE | A five-tiered cake pop display, topped with a cake for cutting, featured flavors of chocolate hazelnut, raspberry white chocolate, and peanut butter.
THE GROOM’S ENSEMBLE | Steve and his eight groomsmen wore gray Vera Wang tuxedos with charcoal-striped ties from Men’s Warehouse. For the Hindu ceremony, Steve wore an Indian sherwani — he returned to his suit for the reception, but with a jewel-toned tie.
