The August Wilson Center for African American Culture welcomed shining nominees, their families, and local celebrities for the Fifth Annual Shyne Awards, a premiere awards ceremony that celebrates the positive achievements of young adults in the region. Eight awards were awarded categories including academics, community service, entrepreneurship, and overcoming obstacles. Alma Speed Fox received the Gwendolyn J. Elliot Lifetime Achievement Award for her 50 years of work in Pittsburgh as an advocate for civil rights, women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights, and the poor and unrecognized. The event was hosted by actor Hosea Chanchez, and special guests in attendance included Pittsburgh native and Hell’s Kitchen contestant Elise Wims, and Savoy owner and philanthropist Chuck Sanders.
