Let My People Go: A Spiritual Journey Along The Underground Railroad
February 15, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Audiences are invited to celebrate Black History Month with this powerful performance of African American spirituals featuring four soloists and two actors backed by the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.
Leading the audience along the Underground Railroad through storytelling, the actors will illuminate the secret codes used by those who traversed the Railroad and explain the importance of the era’s songs. The Junior Mendelssohn Choir, a highly talented ensemble of high school-aged students, will open the show with works by contemporary African American composers and will join the adult choir for the final song, a rousing rendition of “Go Down Moses”.
All soloists and actors in the show will be African American. Particularly, the show’s cast will include internationally acclaimed operatic soprano Elisabeth Stevens, who also runs career workshops for young singers, and will host one while in Pittsburgh. Also featured is dramatic soprano Demareus Cooper as well as Gregg Baker, known for his commanding voice and a favorite of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Tickets go on sale September 1.
