The lyrics “Home could be the Pennsylvania turnpike / Indiana’s early morning dew / High up in the hills of California / Home is just another word for you” from Billy Joel’s “You’re My Home” feel all too familiar to Kari Evans and Brendon Rawlings. After the couple met at a Halloween party while attending the University of Pittsburgh, they moved to Philadelphia, spent time in Indiana, and then California before ultimately settling in Denver, Colo., the site of Brendon’s surprise proposal at a local fall festival. So when they tied the knot, the song was a natural choice for their first dance as husband and wife! The mutual friend who introduced Kari and Brendon officiated their ceremony at the historic Carrie Furnace, and 120 friends and family from their many “homes” joined them in celebrating, noshing on Polish fare like chipped ham, haluski, kielbasa, and sauerkraut, and imbibing in smokestack cocktails. Says Kari, “We’re Pittsburgh through and through; we really wanted to showcase the city, and why we’re so proud to be from here.”
