When states across the country started legalizing same-sex marriage, Houston, Texas, residents Becky Perez and Kimberly Minton waited until they could say “I do” in Pittsburgh. “New England and states in the northeast legalized same-sex marriage years ago, but we didn’t have a connection to those places,” Becky explains. “Once Pennsylvania came on board, we got the ball rolling to have the ceremony and everything in Pittsburgh.” Kimberly, who attended Upper St. Clair High School, relied on her brother, her sister-in-law, and their three children in Bethel Park to help plan the long-awaited nuptials at The Fairmont Pittsburgh. In perfectly coordinated ivory ensembles, the couple of 20 years finally said “I do” in the hotel’s foyer. “We wrote the ceremony, so it had very special meaning to us,” Becky says. “Our officiant was a close friend who got authorized to conduct our ceremony. It was extra meaningful to have someone close to us and near to our hearts.” The brides celebrated with 50 close friends and family members at the reception in the grand ballroom that rocked into the early morning. Thrilled with the results of the day, the newlyweds say every minute of out-of-state planning and coordinating was well worth it. Same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states just 30 days before their wedding day, but Becky says they would’ve picked Pittsburgh as their wedding destination regardless of the timing. “We’re very happy we stayed the course with Pittsburgh,” Kimberly adds. “A lot of our guests hadn’t been to Pittsburgh before, and they thoroughly enjoyed it. It was just a great day all around.”

“We never thought it would happen in our lifetime,” Kimberly says of their big day. “Being there with family and friends was great. We’re beyond thrilled that we’re actually married.”

For dessert, the couple shared an Italian cream cake with cream cheese icing, wrapped in a blue ribbon, with their guests.

Allison McGeary Florist incorporated the blues and purples of The Fairmont Pittsburgh’s grand ballroom for a cool-hued and elegant reception that achieved the “wow factor” Becky and Kim wanted.
